For a period of time, I was obsessed with doom, drone metal, and I wanted to achieve that drone feeling in this piece. I used a transducer to vibrate the piano strings, making them resonate at the frequencies I wanted. At the same time, I placed a microphone inside the piano to work with the speaker to create feedback. But while operating this drone setup, I realized that in drone, it’s not so much about the musicians’ sensibility or emotional intent, but more about the instruments, the room, and the atmosphere. Releasing energy effectively requires careful control—it’s a form of restraint, and that became the second element of this piece.
